The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh. The oracle. The man declares, I am weary, O God; I am weary, O God, and worn out. 2 Surely I am too stupid to be a man. I have not the understanding of a man. 3 I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One. 4 Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know!” (Proverbs 30:1-4)
Have you ever been tempted to give up trying to solve a difficult puzzle? If you’re older you’ll remember giving up trying to solve the Rubik’s Cube by yourself or if you’re younger, you’ll remember downloading the cheat codes for Lara Croft or Age of Empires etc. Agur is a wise man who gives up trying to solve the puzzle of life. It’s just too difficult he says. The search for the meaning of life has left him weary and feeling stupid. There are two things you need if you’re going to solve the meaning of life. You need wisdom but where can we get that from? Who can bring wisdom down from God? Who has knowledge of the Holy One? All we can do is give it our best thoughts but no one has actually gone up to God and come down from God and therefore no one has the wisdom necessary to understand life. The second thing you need is strength. Who has the power to gather the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters? Who created everything? Unless you have power over creation you will not solve the riddle of life. In order to master life you need the wisdom of God and the power of God. Agur is not up to it and he doesn’t know anyone who is. We do. Meet Jesus in the Old Testament. In John 3:12 there is a man who says that only He has ascended into heaven and descended from heaven. There is a man who rebuked the wind of the storm and it obeyed Him and became totally calm. A man once demonstrated His creative power over water by walking on it and turning it into wine. What is his name? Jesus Christ the Son of God. Literally, the Hebrew of verse 1 reads “The man declares to Ithiel and Ucal”. ‘Ithiel’ means ‘God is with me’ and ‘Ucal’ means ‘I am able’. With man the meaning of life is impossible but with God all things are possible. In Jesus, God is with me and with Jesus, I am able! PRAY and praise God that we don’t have to weary ourselves out trying to solve the puzzle of life. Jesus is the Wisdom of God and the Power of God. Jesus is the answer to the meaning of life!
